Hi!I am Chen.And this is why I created
A Day In Beijing.

I was born and raised in Beijing.
And just like any Beijinger, I have always had a strong sense of belonging and loyalty to this city.
Then I moved to London 10 years ago, studied, worked, got married, made lots of fantastic friends, went to lots of amazing places, did lots of cool things.All the years I spent away from home, giving me perspective.
I have never felt so Chinese, until I left China; which I know for sure all my fellow immigrates out there know the feeling.When I’m in the UK, I feel like I am very Chinese. But when I’m in china, I feel very British.Coming home has made me think. I started to wonder if I can leverage this in-between space to do something for good.I’ve heard the frustrations from my British and international friends and family when they visit. I’ve watched the confusion. The overwhelm. The “I don’t even know where to start.And I know - now China is on the way to become trendy. More and more people are coming to explore. But I’m not gonna lie, I do have a huge problem of people coming all the way and treating here as a exotic petting zoo.Watching western influencer content and taking their take of China, following their tips to give china a go. I can’t put my finger on it but I am sick of still being explained by the others in this age and time.Our history already was and is being told from a colonies angel, I don’t want this keep happening again.Beijing has countless cool places and meaningful experiences. Beijing is NOT Shanghai or Hong Kong. It never changes itself to pander to anyone. That's exactly why I love it. But it also means Beijing can be confusing, intimidating, and hard to navigate. Sometimes, simply not knowing where to go or what to do means one small bad experience can shape your entire impression of a place.China's been explained by everyone except Chinese people for long enough. I wanted to change that — starting with my city.So I created A Day in Beijing.I started on my own. One person, no team, no funding, just stubbornness.But I got lucky, there are brilliant people in this city who feel the same way I do. Historians, craftspeople, storytellers, lifelong Beijingers.They're joining me to translate and contextualise this city's history and culture through their own personal stories. watch this space!
